Living Abroad? How to Arrange Care for Your Parents in Andhra Pradesh

Seven steps for NRIs and children living away: talking to parents, choosing care, preparing the home, staying informed and planning for emergencies.

You built a life in Bengaluru, Dubai, London or Texas. Your parents stayed in the home they have lived in for decades, in Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Amalapuram or a small town nearby. For years that worked. Then a fall, a diagnosis or simply age changes things, and the distance suddenly feels enormous.

Many families we speak to are in exactly this position. This guide sets out a practical way to arrange reliable care for your parents in Andhra Pradesh without being there in person.

Step 1: Have the honest conversation

The hardest part is often talking to your parents. Many elders resist outside help because they worry about cost, privacy or being seen as dependent. A few approaches help:

  • Frame it around their independence. A caretaker helps them stay in their own home, which is usually what they want most.
  • Start small. A few hours of help during the day can grow into more care later.
  • Let them choose. Ask whether they would be more comfortable with a woman or a man, and what help they would actually like.
  • Involve a trusted relative or neighbour who lives nearby and can visit.

Step 2: Work out what help is needed

From a distance it is easy to under- or overestimate. Ask specific questions on your calls, or ask a local relative to observe:

  • Are they eating regular meals?
  • Are medicines being taken on time?
  • Can they bathe and use the toilet safely?
  • Have there been any falls or near falls?
  • Are they going out, or staying indoors all day?

Then match the answers to the kind of care: elderly care at home for daily help and company, bedridden patient care if a parent cannot leave the bed, or nursing care at home for injections, dressings and post-surgery care.

Step 3: Choose an agency you can reach at your hours

Time zones matter. If you are in the US, your evening is the middle of the night in India. Look for an agency that answers calls and WhatsApp messages at any hour. Varadhi Home Care is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, so you can call when it suits you.

When you speak to an agency, ask:

  1. What will the caretaker do each day?
  2. What are the charges, and what changes them?
  3. How will you keep me informed?
  4. What happens if my parent is not comfortable with the caretaker?
  5. What is the plan in a medical emergency?

Step 4: Prepare the home and the information

Before the caretaker starts, make sure the essentials are written down and easy to find at home:

  • A list of medicines, with doses and times
  • The family doctor's name and phone number
  • The nearest hospital and how to get there
  • Emergency contacts: you, a local relative, a neighbour
  • Allergies, diet restrictions and food preferences
  • Your parents' daily routine

A copy on your phone and a printed copy on the fridge is a good habit.

Step 5: Stay connected without micromanaging

Set a rhythm that works for everyone. Some families like a short WhatsApp update every day; others prefer a call twice a week. Video calls let you see how your parents look and how the home is kept.

Speak to your parents privately too. Ask open questions: How is she treating you? Is there anything you would like changed? Older parents often avoid complaining so as not to worry their children, so listen for what they do not say.

Step 6: Plan for emergencies

Agree in advance what happens if something goes wrong:

  • The caretaker should call 108 in a medical emergency, then inform you and the agency.
  • Keep a local relative or neighbour on the emergency list who can reach the hospital quickly.
  • Know which hospital your parents prefer, and keep their reports in one folder.
  • If a parent is admitted, arrange a hospital attendant so someone stays by their bed.

Step 7: Review every few months

Needs change. A parent who needed a few hours of help may need a live-in caretaker after an illness. Review the arrangement every few months, and after any hospital stay.

What about cost?

Costs depend on the type of care, the hours and the town. Ask the agency to explain every charge before care starts. Our pricing page explains what affects the price.

When you visit

Your visits home are valuable for more than family time. Meet the caretaker, watch the daily routine, check the medicines and the condition of the home, and talk to neighbours. Small adjustments made in person can make a big difference after you leave.

You do not have to do this alone

Distance makes caring for parents harder, but not impossible. With a reliable caretaker, a clear routine and regular contact, many parents live comfortably and safely at home for years.

Varadhi Home Care Services is based in Peddapuram, Kakinada district, and serves families across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Read more on our page for families abroad, or contact us by WhatsApp from wherever you are.
